The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America
The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America
In The Devil in the White City, the smoke, romance, and mystery of the Gilded Age come alive as never before. Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America?s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair?s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country?s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his ?World?s Fair Hotel? just west of the fairgrounds?a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium. Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake. The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larson?s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both. Some of the most gorgeous artwork from early Art Nouveau, and Art Deco periods could be found in the advertisements that were widely distributed throughout the country. These included food crate labels, magazine ads, general store displays, and catalogs. Much of these early ad pieces are extremely rare in any condition. Very few paper items survived because of the hard way of life with scrap paper being recycled for every day use. We have painstakingly and professionally restored each of these images for physical integrity and color accuracy. In addition to restoring the original vibrant colors, we also dillgently removed or repaired most of the tears, scratches, stains and other damage so that each image is as high quality as possible. Very heavy weight photo paper is used in printing our reproduction advertisement artwork (80 lb. paper). We also use a high gloss paper to really make the image stand out. Inks used in this process have a 75 year archive life and have been specially made and blended and can last up to 100 years if not in direct sunlight. Each one is produced one at time. We work very hard to produce these to match the colors of the originals. Most images will have a quarter to one half inch border around the image so it can be framed. These are gorgeous but at a affordable price and can be used for home, wall, room and office decor. Ideal for historical research, display, scrap booking, and card making. Looks great in any room for that vintage or antique look. Also great for the ephemera collector and is just a neat collectible or gift for the person that has everything.

New York, Chicago, Los Angeles: America's Global Cities
New York, Chicago, Los Angeles: America's Global Cities
New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles -- for all their differences, they are quintessentially American cities. They are also among the handful of cities on the earth that can be called "global". Janet L. Abu-Lughod's book is the first to compare them in an ambitious in-depth study that takes into account each city's unique history, following their development from their earliest days to their current status as players on the global stage.

The City Lost and Found: Capturing New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, 1960?1980 (Princeton University Art Museum)
The City Lost and Found: Capturing New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, 1960?1980 (Princeton University Art Museum)
An unprecedented exploration of the relationship between art, architecture, social history, and public policy in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles in the 1960s and '70s American cities underwent seismic transformations in the 1960s and '70s, from shifting demographics and political protests to reshaping through highways and urban renewal. Amid this climate of upheaval, photographers, architects, activists, performance artists, and filmmakers turned conditions of crisis into sites for civic discourse and artistic expression. The City Lost and Found explores photographic and cinematic responses to the changing fabric of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles that contributed to a reconsideration of cities in popular media and urban policy during this period. This book raises timely questions about the role of art within the social, political, and physical landscape of cities.   Featuring contributions from more than 20 noted scholars in fields including art history, urban planning, architecture, and cultural studies, this is the first publication to address an important shift in photographic, cinematic, and planning practices based on close observations of streets, neighborhoods, and seminal events in the country?s three largest cities. Over 200 illustrations bring together works by major artists and newly rediscovered projects to complete this outstanding resource on the art and architectural production during these turbulent decades.
